How did this all start...... the beginning

The pages in this wiki, document my journey into technology .

I was given a wonderful PD opportunity by my mentors, Jan Roberts from Community College East Gippsland

and Josie Rose from ACFE.

I was being trained by facilitators that have the knowledge, wisdom and foresight to see the positive use in education of blended and online training.

This AccessACE PD helped me develop and deliver a fully online class for safe food handling which was implemented with students from Bendoc and Benambra taking part in the trial.
I started implementing e-learning when I was an accredited Workskills trainer and had to take my own photos in my town of local Cafés and their staff to create some resources and training manuals for my Hospitality students. during this time my colleagues were teaching me and helping me develop IT skills.

We were a small RTO training organisation and we could not afford to purchase photos.
Tutor PD is very expensive for NFP,s a conference or training PD can cost up to $600 Only one or two if you are lucky from an organisation can go unless the conference is free and of course we also have the tyranny of distance problem in Australia

The emergence Web 2.0 all of a sudden added a push and pull and a Social side to our training and opened up the doors to the Networking and sharing we still do.

It was our first step in Building our Personal Learning Networks and Community of practices.
We all don’t want to reinvent the wheel and being able to share our ideas, our skills and knowledge freely ensures we have a country of well-informed teachers.

So the use of digital forums on LMS, wikis, social media and blogs is growing amongst the education sector as we move to a more sharing and networking culture

From 2007 till September 2010 Community College East Gippsland allowed me to implement a training cafe for students undertaking Vcal (Victorian certificate applied learning)2008/9 ,Esl (English as a second language)2008/9/10 and Connections Program 2008/9/10

During 2010 the program was still a success,It gave a new intake of students the opportunity to learn new workskills and ICT skills that enhance their IT ability. Students had access to a computer course at the college delivered by my colleague Clare, their anxiety about computer use disappeared

During 2008/09 my Hospitality media studies students, became interested in the blended learning approach and were happy to engage.
It was enjoyable watching the students develop their wiki's and blogs.
Certificate II students were able to source information, they were able to put into practice in the cafe environment.
The use of blogs were fantastic for evidence gathering.
For 2010 I am working with a new approach towards gaining evidence with the use of more blogs.
As well as a diary of the days tasks the blogs will be used to answer food safety questions.
The evidence gathering with the blog can show photos of the job tasks, audio recordings and customer feedback.
I have a group of students that have LLN problems this year,so I will develop an accredited safe food handling program with audio assessments and movies to upload to a student blog .
Most of the Esl students will find work in the hospitality or food industry so I am encouraging those that can undertake Certificate II in hospitality to attempt the qualification.

This went fantastic I enjoyed developing the program and the interaction online in synchronous time was beneficial to us all.
All critera was met for assessment purposes.
Work books and assessment were sent to the students to complete in their time. Some assessments were developed as polls and surveys and completed and saved to word.
Live classrooms are an excellent tool, we have moved to Elluminate which is also user friendly .
The functions in the live classroom are vast and easy to use.
This online course is now implemented at Community College East Gippsland and is part of curriculum
The technology inspired me to create my own blogs, fun with food and budget cookery .During 2008 I encouraged my students to participate in adding posts to a student activity blog. The students embraced this blended learning approach by documenting a daily report.
A laptop was set up in the kitchen, and each student documented their job tasks for each day of the workskills cafe program.

The majority of the students completed 5 units of the Certificate II Hospitality and with the help of the blog they documented their progress twice a week.
The blog posts have been a big success with a write up in an Ames newsletter about my Esl students posts. Blogging has proved a useful tool as the students also became familiar with the technology. The use of blogs in the classroom can be community building and an honest assessment of the day in which it was written. Other tutors were able to access the blog to find extra evidence for them selves also.

The students have also a discussion room set up in ning for their questions and answer. They will be encouraged to use this room for their own community engagement.
I feel that wikispaces, wetpaint and ning to be the ideal classroom for my 2009 Certificate II Hospitality and Media studies class.
This method of training will improve the students' skills and knowledge of the hospitality industry and improve their IT skills.
Individual students are completing different units at the same time and the blended training approach will make it a better structured course.

The Cafe Ning was abandoned thru lack of computer time and access. However Nings use is now used at the college for tutor information and collaboration.Ning is an excellent social network site, for relaying information, events, news and administration. I feel its use will be long lasting and beneficial to the college.

2008 The Inspiration...
e-portfolios with Jan Roberts and Denise McLarty led my focus to the createn of an e-portfolio using wikispaces.
Wikispaces is the perfect tool,It is user friendly and as I am learning how easy it is to maintain and create.
(With the help of "gettingtrickywithwiki" an excellent site from Lena in NewZealand)
This PD blended perfectly with my e-mentor's PD. where I learned about the use of Web 2.0,wikis and podcasting in the classroom.
I was shown the way with the guidance of Josie Rose and the wisdom of e-mentor trainers (some I had met before and some I have met online in the wimba or elluminate synchronous classroom).

Web 2.0 offers so much for developing training and assessing.The use of the many applications available like Slideshare, Voxopop,Flickr Youtube, Voice thread give the trainer excellent evidence in the classroom. Ementors are champions of e-learning and have directed me to useful applications and stimulated my imagination.

The reason..
Community College East Gippsland encouraged me to set up and facilitate a college cafe two days a week where students can develop the work skills needed for future employment .
The use of blended learning, I hope, will stimulate the students into seeking knowledge about the hospitality industry.
With assignments, assessments and research activities available on each student's Wiki, this will offer a new way to learn and understand the hospitality industry.
For students from a regional area, 250km-from the nearest major city, it is often difficult to obtain the overall knowledge of the hospitality industry. Blended learning will help the student update their knowledge and discover the hospitality work ethos that is universal.

2009 .We taught the students in the use of wikis before the cafe opened and with the support of Fiona Ross, I now have the students developing their wikis into a positive e-portfolio of the year's achievements.
I printed each assignment that was completed for extra evidence for the //AQF// requirements .
I have been asked and welcome the opportunity to share my knowledge of wikispaces to my colleagues and hope to encourage them in developing e-learning pedagogy.

How it went...
Development of a resource hub with the use of creative commons and Web 2.0 was an excellent way for the students to source the information needed to complete their unit of study. This worked extremely well because the focus stayed within the website and no time was wasted on searching, as all links and sites were connected.
Students developed a wiki in Wetpaint in collaboration with Fiona Ross and we created a small student e-portfolio.
I uploaded assessment work for Certificate II Hospitality to a page with the link to the resourse hub, It was time consuming but effective.
Each student was able to work on separate units of work which worked well with our rolling starts.
My Accessace colleague Wayne Burrell made available an excellent WRS Program that also was completed fully online, It was an excellent training tool. The students generally did not have computers at home so all work was done at the college, I was able to monitor their progress relatively easy. The student's wiki's were closed to the public with only the student ,myself and Fiona able to view and edit the wiki. Updates were send to my email address so I was aware when a student was working. For our records at the college I printed pages of the online assessment work for evidence.
Alas Fiona had a job change early in the year so literacy was no longer part of the students e-portfolio.
The use of Web 2.0 helped in the assessment process I added audio, photography, movies, PowerPoint to disks as evidence.
